What does the great oracle think about his. i am unconvinced this is a good 'interpreation' of what really happened. I personally don't believe God is into mythical accountsCardinal George Pell appeared alongside renowned evolutionary biologist and atheist, Professor Richard Dawkins, on the ABC's Q&A program last night.Cardinal Pell said the existence of Adam and Eve was not a matter of science but rather a mythological account."It's a very sophisticated mythology to try to explain the evil and the suffering in the world," he said."It's a religious story told for religious purposes."I see George has a Masters Degree in Education. Perhaps you could give him a few pointers on the Bible oh wise one.

Hello, Guest.

What does the great oracle think about his. '[T]his'? What '[t]his'? The 'blurb' that you've cut-and-pasted below? i am unconvinced this is a good 'interpreation' of what really happened. I've no doubt. I personally don't believe God is into mythical accounts. Then I personally reckon you don't adequately understand either God or 'myth'.

Cardinal George Pell appeared alongside renowned evolutionary biologist and atheist, Professor Richard Dawkins, on the ABC's Q&A program last night.
He did, indeed. Cardinal Pell said the existence of Adam and Eve was not a matter of science but rather a mythological account."It's a very sophisticated mythology to try to explain the evil and the suffering in the world," he said."It's a religious story told for religious purposes."I see George has a Masters Degree in Education. Perhaps you could give him a few pointers on the Bible oh wise one. No need, given that the quote attributed to Cardinal Pell was largely correct in what it asserted. Consider, the existence of Adam and Eve isn't a matter of science, given that science seeks to investigate phenomena via the testing of hypotheses through observation and experimentation under controlled conditions. The Garden is no longer available to us, hence the conditions needed for both observation and experimentation don't exist. No observation; no experimentation, equals no 'science'.

Then there is the fact of literary genre to consider as we approach the early chapters of Genesis. Put simply, the biblical Creation account wasn't intended to present a 'scientific theory' of origins; rather a sophisticated rebuttal of contemporary Ancient Near Eastern creation mythologies (e.g. Enuma Elish and the Atrahasis Epic). Ignorance of the preconditions underpinning discussions such as this one invariably results in uninformed and naive points-of-view.

Finally, we should remember that Cardinal George Pell is a pastor to priests and not a scientist, biblical scholar and/or philosopher. Much better indeed are those debates where Professor Dawkins is pitted against professional scientists who are also philosophically sophisticated Christians :)
