Bible also somewhere difines faith by saying something like, believing onthings which you have not seen. Christianity and almost all other religions are based on faith.I have a question - What is the difference between Faith and Imagination/assumption ? I cant see much difference, does anyone here (according to bible or otherwise) can someone try to explain.

Re:What is Faith ? Date Posted:17/07/2006 7:31 AMCopy HTML good question.
everyone in church (at least revival) knows about hebrews eleven... the substance of things unseen etc. the reason why i like this topic is because, from what i remember studying, jesus was talking about GOOD faith when he was telling people what to have. a big difference from "knowing" that something is going to happen against all odds. in a way) it's the same in the sense that it is all about (imho - do i have to keep justifying myself like this?) having POSITIVE THINKING as opposed to negative. (read something like "the power of positive thinking" (by cs lewis (?)). i think churches use faith as an excuse for things not going one's way (or the way the church/bible says they will go if you follow such and such easy instructions). like h&s's example, prayer requests etc. people can use this to get you to do almost anything... it's like "trust me, i'm a doctor". things unseen--- like ALL THE MIRACLES IN THE BIBLE... anyone seen one? don't worry... have FAITH that they DID happen and now do all these things. on the other hand, things in this life seem to involve uncertainty and faith in friends, relatives and spice (my plural for spouse) seem necessary, even if to reduce your worries. basically, if you really thought about all the shit that goes on in this world, you would go nuts. in this way, faith is good in my life as a form of ignorance. i usually interpret faith in the way i percieved jesus to mean, i.e. GOOD faith. positive thinking, hope. it's a word that seems to refer to future happenings and good faith is such a good thing to have and something that most people who preach the use of faith lack. because they are such prophets of doom: "the world is falling to pieces, the world is going to end, you need salvation, man has fallen from eden and god's grace" their doomsday prophecy is what brings about the need for their definition of faith. i wish they would all swallow their pride and except that they are just monkeys and if they had good faith, they wouldn't be so bananas. hardy ha ha) if it gives you joy, enjoy! life aint pretty without it

Excellent question! Honestly, I believe that the difference between faith and imagination or assumption is dangerously slim. In other words, one can have faith based on fact or truth and one can have faith based on complete shite. I think what you're asking is, how do we know that one's religious faith is not just assumption or imagination? The thing is, we can't really know. The spiritual is not testable empirically like so much that science has 'proved'. If you want to test your faith., ie the claims and tenets of your faith, go ahead...and see what you come up with. I did that kinda by accident. I started with the Mormons and JWs (and Revival Centres of course) and then when I turned the measuring stick back on Christianity, I saw it was just as untenable as these other religions. And so, I walked away... |

the evidence is usually in the form of a personal relationship with god. belief is kind of what happens after a leap of faith. the faith leap is kind of like ignorance. and going against all odds, rationality and reality towards something imagined. usually by someone else before you. belief is almost like ignorance to everything that does not fit into what you believe. so you have faith in someone else's imagination if it sounds like a good thing to believe. and it becomes a reality, because you want it to be. you start seeing coincidences and truths and parallels. then the plausibility strutures cement this imagination. if it gives you joy, enjoy! life aint pretty without it
