It? so sad when evil cults like CAI take your belief in Jesus and God from you. I was a dedicated Christian person before CAI trapped me. Now after I managed to leave CAI I can? believe in a God any more. The abusive leaders in CAI have taken every bit of happiness and my joy over my life from me, I know feel. It? so sad. CAI has to be stopped and destroyed. For us, for all the children (not to mention for all the children inside CAI) and for mankind. CAI is like cancer, and if it not will be stopped it will spread to other people as well.

Shark,

Sorry, but the CAI didn't make you an atheist. You made that decision for yourself.

the Shark / Sott1

I can understand what you mean shark but I agree with Sott here as well. It is your decision.

Sott, nevertheless it is hard to say it so clear as you have done it w/o any more words. You have never been part of the CAI. But maybe if you read more about the CAI you can get a touch of the cult.

Shark, go on and give yourself a chance with Jesus. Forget Scott!

Folks say they are atheist because they haven't knowingly seen the christ.  The truth is, many people which think they are atheist really are not.  They express love, joy, peace, patience, etc.  We can't see love because it's invisible.  We can't see joy because it's invisible.  However, we can see the expression of these things and the expression is the son of god.  How do we know?  Because God is love.  God is joy.  God is peace. God is patience...and the expression of God thru mankind is the Son.

A questioning mind, an education in science and thousands of hours of reading made me an athiest.

The claims about the existence of god or gods just didn't stack up. Just ancient superstitions muddled with a willing suspension of disbelief, backed up by a large dose of groupthink.

Couldn't imagine believing all that claptrap now... it just seems so silly.

Hi LNR

A questioning mind, an education in science (Master's level including biology and mathematics) and thousands of hours of reading (including a smattering of philosophy) has left me confident in my Christianity.

We ex-Revivalists need to remember that "revivalist" teaching often has little biblical Christianity in its docrtinal mix, although in my experience there are Christians in the groups.

Atheism per se is, from a logical perspective, arguably a self-defeating proposition. Agnosticism on the other hand is a *little* more challenging.

Science is great, but the logical fallacy of Hume's fork needs to be recognised.

Hi Talmid,

Regarding the invocation of Hume's Fork - I cannot demonstrate the non-existence of gods (or unicorns or gnomes for that matter), so yes it would be technically incorrect of me to say that god(s) do not exist.

I have merely said that I don't believe in them, that's all.

Atheism is an absence of belief in gods.

There is no logical fallacy in saying that you do not believe in the supernatural.

Hi LNR

Aaah ... I was assuming the defn of atheism used in philosophy: viz the positive affirmation that there is(are) no god(s) ... rather than the watered down version adopted to avoid catostrophic failure in debates ;-)

If you're saying god(s) may or may not exist then that's 'agnosticism' in the world of philosophy.

Now ... if you're positively affirming that there's nothing 'supernatural' you come up against the same kind of problem as philosophical atheism.

To whet you appetite a little further, I think you've missed my point about Hume's fork. In brief, in the form I know it, it's self-defeating.

Hi Talmid - this sounds like a good discussion to have over a beer or three :)

I think you're over-intellectualising my statement at little...

An agnostic is a fence-sitter - he treats the likelihood of the existence or non-existence of gods to be equally probable. An atheist (such as myself) says that upon examination of available evidence, the probability is remote at best. I personally think that an agnostic is someone who hasn't opened enough books on the subject to make a valid comment. Perhaps he doesn't care, which I can see is also a valid standpoint, though perhaps a little vacuous.

As you identify yourself as Christian, I'll take it as a given that you believe that the archangel Gabriel did not appear to Mohammed and dictate the Koran. Answer this question: did this happen or did it not? I would like to see the form in which you answer the question.

Yo LNR

> I think you're over-intellectualising my statement at little...

If you say so ... I thought I was systematically examining the validity of your statements, and perhaps encouraging you to do so too.

> An agnostic is a fence-sitter - he treats the likelihood of the existence or non-existence of gods to be equally probable. Well, an agnostic is more someone who thinks one can't know whether god(s) exist or not, so I shouldn't have applied that to you. I guess technically you're a 'weak atheist' ... apologies ...

Personally, I think that upon examination of available evidence the probability is remote at best that life arose via materialist mechanisms, and of course there's issues such as the 1st cause ... :-P

> As you identify yourself as Christian, I'll take it as a given that you believe that the archangel Gabriel did not appear to Mohammed and dictate the Koran.

No ... As a Christian I believe the truth claims of Jesus and am his disciple ... and I'm not aware of him or the scriptures saying anything about this. Perhaps I'm wrong.

> Answer this question: did this happen or did it not?

I haven't examined this truth claim beyond my previous statement, so I'm not prepared to express an opinion.

> I would like to see the form in which you answer the question.

Well, there you have it. Frankly though, if you think you've already made my adopting a theist world view untenable, there's little point going further to question the particular version of theism I've adopted.

The evidence for Mann-made global warming is unequivocal.
