Lies and deceit are all the rage in CAI, John. In fact, most wouldn't survive there without them. I remember my husband being severely rebuked for not lying on his Australian visa application. He should have lied about his profession and the kind of work he'd been doing for the last two years as with the work he had really been doing he would not have been admitted. This was referred to at the time as "wisdom" and another CAI member who had lied on their application was held up as some kind of hero as he had now entered the promised land. I doubt my husband's "heathen" employer would have been too impressed at having to write a false reference and lie about the sort of company it was. Luckily we left the assemby shortly afterwards so didn't have to ask him to.

I doubt Scott really had any reason to fear going to Germany. The whole thing was calcuated to instill fear into the assembly, to reinforce the idea of how evil anything Germanic is and to give some credit to the idea that he was actually a person chosen by God to lead some kind of church. I mean, if he wasn't being persecuted then something must be wrong so why not invent a little persecution?

I was present when the whole car escape thing was planned. He was in Holland on the phone to someone in Braunschweig, who being a typical German pig, made the slip up of saying "we can talk about that tomorrow when you're here". Of course, all our phones were being tapped because we were in such a revolutionary group and now the evil German authorities knew that he would be entering their territory sometime tomorrow. He was flying which involved using a passport and going through some kind of border control - this was the early 90s and borders were not as easy to get through as now. Anyone who has to sneak into a country because they are wanted by that country's police does not fly there. But in the assembly most people's brains were still disengaged so no one stopped to consider this. Instead a ridiculous escape plan was drawn up with cars at all sides of the airport and people ready to sneak him out to them. I doubt anyone batted an eyelid when he walked through passport control.

We all pretty much fell for it though - here was this humble little man who had brought us all salvation and the evil German nazis wanted to take him away from us so we fought through in prayer and escape plans - and then the evil German nazis brought some trumped up charges against him in his native Australia (this would never have happened in the 50s guys when everyone fulfilled their role) and once again, he suffers persecution for following the Lord.

no idea but it wouldn't surprise me. The "poor" man only earns $400 a month and supports a family on that as well as giving away 50 dollar bills to any cute hot thing crossing his path. How would you afford legal fees on that kind of salary?!
