Didi,

I have taken somewhat of an interest in Church history over last couple of years and you have directed me to a couple of good authors to assist in other areas. Fee etc plus you listed a few bibles and study books some 8 months ago.
By the way I love reading the Reformed Bible, it's become a staple.

In the last 6 weeks or so I took a keen interest in Jonathan Edwards 1700'sand some of his many writings sermons / observations.

I know there were many like him ie John Wesley in UK 1700's.

Can you please direct me to some Authors that would help me to see that what we are currently experiencing (politics, overemphasis on points of doctrine, poor administration etc etc ) in the likes of RF & pentecost, to help me move forward.

I note that some time back you said if asked you would call yourself a Calvanist.
Calvin & Luther were obviously prominant reformers but I'm confident there were many more and earlier.

Thanks in advance, I trust you will help me shortcut the loads of rubbish that is out there.

Frank

Hi, Frank.

A very long time, no hear.

I have taken somewhat of an interest in Church history over last couple of years and you have directed me to a couple of good authors to assist in other areas. Fee etc plus you listed a few bibles and study books some 8 months ago. By the way I love reading the Reformed Bible, it's become a staple.

Sure, but didn't you 'blow-me-off' a couple of months ago?

In the last 6 weeks or so I took a keen interest in Jonathan Edwards 1700'sand some of his many writings sermons / observations.

Yep. A noted antebellum preacher.

I know there were many like him ie John Wesley in UK 1700's.

Edwards was Reformed (and therefore Calvinist). Wesley was Arminian (and therefore not a Calvinist), but I do get the point that you were attempting to make.

Can you please direct me to some Authors that would help me to see that what we are currently experiencing (politics, overemphasis on points of doctrine, poor administration etc etc ) in the likes of RF & pentecost, to help me move forward.

Hadn't I done as much previously? And then ad infinitum?

I note that some time back you said if asked you would call yourself a Calvanist. Calvin & Luther were obviously prominant reformers but I'm confident there were many more and earlier.

Okay.

Thanks in advance, I trust you will help me shortcut the loads of rubbish that is out there.

To whit I would respond: there's still loads of rubbish in there, where you currently fellowship. Or has Toowoomba cut ties with the broader RF?

Blessings,

Ian

No I don't recall blowing you off. The last discussions you and I had were more than reasonable.
In fact there was a mention of coming to Tmba. I was away.
At any rate, thanks for the response.
No Tmba has not cut ties.

Good morning, Frank.

I've been giving your request some thought, and this weekend I decided to rummage through my personal collection to locate a book that would (a) meet your needs, (b) that would likely still be available, and (c) that would be pitched at the right level.

The one that best meets these three criteria is: The Evangelical Heritage: a study in historical theology, by Bernard Ramm (foreward by Kevin Vanhoozer). Don't let the title fool you, this is actually quite a trenchant study on Protestant theology and practice from the Reformation through the latter 20th century. Ramm does address the Patristic era in passing, but most of the work centres on the development of Protestant belief from pre-Reformation onwards. And given that Ramm was an American, the context of the work is American evangelicalism.

It's a good read, and it will go some way towards helping you to understand the whys and wheretofors of schism.

Blessings,

Ian

Thanks Ian, the book was out of print but I found a copy via internet and will have it in 10 days or so.

Regards Frank.
