Hi, Eric.
Well I hope the next iteration of the NIV continues to follow the example of the TNIV, by correcting the remaining (glaring) translational and textual errors that largely put me off the original NIV years ago! I found that I had to qualify far too much of what the NIV presented as I preached from it in church settings.
My own "taste", as you know, runs to the ESV for a formally equivalent English translation, and to the NLT for a functionally equivalent translation. But that's just me.

The ESV is my most referenced reading but I must make apology for the NLT because I have always confused it the Watchtower mess: "New World Translation".. hence I have ignorantly avoided it..
NLT "functionally equivalent " as you describe it eg John 1:1 sounds good to me

I find the NIV a comfortable read myself..
