Hi John

I think St Jerome may have been, in particular, speaking of those that saw the church as a place to do business to make gain from. This is anathema to me. I would rather do something for material at cost, and free labour, than to be accountable for usury and or extortion.

John

Yes our local church had the need to get an eftpos connection at the main library bookshop. But the problem was the phone connecting point stopped at another building 200 feet away so I have cabling licence being a former Telecommunication Technician. And so I volunteered to do the work for them which wasn't a bother to me. Ended up doing the whole job, parts and all, for free.. Tell you of a funny incident. I needed to get a trench dug down at least to regulatory 400mm and we didn't or could not get a trencher so next thing one of the young fellas disappeared and next thing he came back with his trail bike and big nobbly tyres and revved the thing like mad ( I think it may have been 500cc's or thereabouts ) and with his back wheel cut a "burn out" in the soil (it was a sandy loam) right down pass the chain sprocket mind you !!  and then did the trench for us... all the way between the two buildings. I ended up throwing in a couple of data links as well... It was all good fun.

Hey Meta

Particularly like the bike reference. Necessity is the mother of invention alright. I haven't been on a dirt bike in years, but I can almost hear and smell the trench being 'dug' by bike tyres.

Metanoin,

I hope his motorbike was the brand mentioned in scripture.......

For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands. Psalm 92.4

And here's one with both the motorbike and the communication........

Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. (2 Corinthians 2:14)

We used to call them "trumpy's"  and another favourite from my youth was the BSA which was pronounced "Beeza"... tell you I often enjoy watching American Chopper on the Discovery Channel too. If I had the money, I'd have a Harley.

That "trumpy" you've got photoed is a "classic" bike but being a model over 30 years old ( it would be more around Ian Thomason's age - by the look of it :-p ) is these days classified as "Historic". Would be a very valuable asset to hold on to  and I love the look of those spoked wheels... How's the motor ?? does it blow a lot of blue smoke or is she totally reconditioned ??

Reply to Metanoian.
The "Trumpy" is a  1970 T110C 500cc competion model. Motor has a big bore kit and has just been rebuilt. Goes like a rocket.
We also have a 1937 Plymouth, 1951 Hillman, 1954 Ford Customline and a 1960 Tank Fairlane camper. My other bike is a 1952 Jawa 250 twin port. Just sold a 1929 Ford model A panel van.
Thanks for your interest.

You remind me of the car we most loved owning. The Austin A90 - it overheated once on the way to RCI Xmas Camp - so we disconnected the entire bonnet and tied it to the roof. More air meant cooling down the engine and we arrived looking like the Beverly Hillbillies.

Rob,

Ha ha - I never thought of that. We would not be put off, though, from our spiritual trek. We'd have been better off going on a jaunt up the coast where the air is cooler and where there was no pressure to be good RCI folk!!
