urchin: You were talking about hypnotism?
16 Aug 08, 19:56
Moth: Yeah, hypnotism is a crock, but I'm amazed (but shouldn't be) with the amount of people who are taken in by it. I went to the psychic expo down the road... it wasn't fantabulous.
16 Aug 08, 19:57
urchin: so, you went to the psychic expo - did they know you were coming?
16 Aug 08, 19:58
urchin: the reason i mentioned hypnotism is cos there is guy at rf here in adelaide that has just become a hypnotherapist
16 Aug 08, 19:58
urchin: started his own business and all
16 Aug 08, 19:59
urchin: used hypnosis to 'fix' people's problems/habits/issues etc
16 Aug 08, 19:59
Moth: Yeah, I went to a couple of expensive and well known hypnotherapists when I went witchdoctor hunting while searching for a tinnitus cure.
16 Aug 08, 20:01
urchin: heard he's been able to 'witness' to people & has brought them along to rf.
16 Aug 08, 20:01
urchin: probably the only way they can get new people along these days??
16 Aug 08, 20:02
Moth: A Revivalist hypnotherapist? Pfft... just when you think you've read about enough stupidity for one day. Well, it's a good marriage. Both require people to blank their minds and be open to the suggestions of a con man.
16 Aug 08, 20:04
urchin: He 'studied' & got qualified without talking to the pastors about it & just opened his clinic in his house. (Southern Hynosis Centre if you wanna have a look)
16 Aug 08, 20:06
urchin: Then the pastors got wind of it & were NOT happy, but as he's a wealthy businessman and also has brought some new people along, they decided it was OK
16 Aug 08, 20:06
urchin: bizarro!
16 Aug 08, 20:08
Moth: Penn and Teller are world famous magicians and they exposed the myths and secrets of hypnotherapy well enough for me. Not that I believe everything P&T say in their TV series, 'Bullshit', but this was a topic that magicians and psychological illusionists should know well. Derren Brown is also amazing for exposing these techniques and has a show on uk-tv.
16 Aug 08, 20:11
urchin: his website states; he devotes his time to helping people to achieve positive, beneficial beliefs through the amazing naturally-occurring state of hypnosis; helping people to believe and receive a life of health, success and happiness.
16 Aug 08, 20:12
urchin: He raves on about how wealthy he is & how many businesses he has and then encourages people to come & see him so that they can ' believe and receive' the same benefits. UNREAL or what!!
16 Aug 08, 20:14
Moth: All these things are ultimately difficult, or impossible, to prove are a result of sessions with a hypnotherapist. It's hit and miss and a huge placebo effect. Pay the $150 dollars and have someone whisper sweet nothings in your ear for an hour, then if the life change happens trace it back to the hypnotist. The shades of 'prayer line' thinking is strikingly similar, if you know what I mean (not meant as a debunking statement of all prayer).
16 Aug 08, 20:20
Moth: Meh, what a jerk this hypnoRevivalist sounds. I'm too annoyed to talk about it anymore. Gets my goat. Parents to entertain and movie to watch. Catch you later.
16 Aug 08, 20:22
urchin: catchya
16 Aug 08, 20:30
urchin: another quote from their website: Hypnosis is a naturally-occurring state that you have already experienced many times during the day. The twilight time as you drift off to sleep and emerge from sleep, daydreaming, zoning out with a good book or movie, driving your car ‘auto-pilot’ while being deep in thought. All are examples of a light state of hypnosis." Or try Sunday arvos at rf meeting!! LOL
16 Aug 08, 20:31
urchin: And BTW moth, he's SO good that it's not $150 it's $180/session
16 Aug 08, 20:36
urchin: another enlightening bit from his website: "With hypnotherapy, any negative, restricting beliefs are instantly replaced with positive beneficial beliefs." Boy, no wonder the rf pastors weren't happy! Where's the mention of God in all this?

Didaktikon: Just visited the RF "Hypnocrap :/ " website. What a joke Ian
16 Aug 08, 22:49
Didaktikon: Here's a man who is apparently not just a Revivalist (which bespeaks a lack of credibility to begin with), but a "name-it-claim-it/health-wealth-and-prosperity" twit as well. Seems to me that he's skating very close to The Edge! Ian

Pete,

What I find interesting about this situation (that is, an apparently wealthy RF-er who is also supposedly a "trained" hypnotherapist) is the apparent disjunction that exists between the fellow's theology (a la Revivalism) and his practice (a la Mesmerism). Here is a man who seeks to "tweak" with the psyche, but apparently without considering either the underlying somatic or pneumatic issues. And for the record, the "counselling/psychotherapy/hypnotherapy" industry is replete with those who gained their "diplomas" from less-than-reputable sources. It doesn't take very much at all in the way of training, experience or professional competence to stick a shingle up on the door that says: "Counsellor and Hypnotherapist".

Given Johnny K's well-known antipathy towards counselling in general, I wonder why it is that he tolerates thi$

Blessings,

Ian

RE:Revivalist Hypnotherapist
(Date Posted:17/08/2008 03:05:16)

Hi Ian, Urch, Moth,

I found the post on the Revival hypnotist saint quite amusing.  To quote Ian "Given Johnny K's well-known antipathy towards counselling in general I wonder why it is that he tolerates thi$".

My theory on it is that perhaps deep in Johnny K's subconscious he senses a similarity between the power of suggestion as used in hypnosis and similar techniques used by Revivalist pastors.  Also as Urch said of the hypnotist saint that "he's been able to "witness" to people and has brought them along to RF".   Surely in that case an unofficial stamp of approval would have to be given.  I have witnessed some very unusual recruitment campaigns and have found that they're usually not fussy if the end result is conversion (to Revival)

Whether pastors are aware or not, the power of suggestion is applied often at meetings and particularly when "new people" are present.  Inevitably an abridged version of 2 Çorinthians 6:2  "today is the day of salvation and now is the appointed time" pops up and is strongly emphasised.  The call to raise hands for baptisism is often followed by statements such as:- "You want to know that your sins are forgiven.  You want to know that you're right with God.  You want to live forever"  If there are "new people" but no hands raised it follows "perhaps we are all Spiritfilled, however,  if there is anyone wanting baptism, the mens' change-room is here and the ladies' change-room there" (pointing).

Of course the "salvation message" being reinforced at just about every meeting is another example of repetitious suggestion, as is the putting down of other churches as being wrong and the straight gate and narrow way and few who enter as being the Revival way.

Epi
