Just change a few of the names and presto - you have the GRC...

Ex-cult members speak out over abuse

June 23, 2008 12:01am

Article from: AAP

FORMER cult members have spoken out to warn others of a Brisbane church they say is emotionally abusing its followers.

Former followers have told ABC's Four Corners program, to air tonight, the Brisbane Christian Fellowship, in the north Brisbane suburb of Stafford, was ripping apart families under a veil of secrecy.

They said elders, including leader Victor Hall, made all members' decisions and drove wedges between couples, siblings and parents and children to create fear and control followers.

Followers are banished if they disobey directions.

The church is linked to others worldwide, including the Melbourne Christian Fellowship, and has been operating under different names in Australian since the 1950s.

Former member Helen Pomery, who was expelled for refusing to shun her excommunicated daughter, said she had considered suicide during her time with the group and had to travel to a deprogramming centre in the USA after she left.

"I was very sick emotionally, mentally, and I was at the point of suicide and I knew if I didn't get help then I would probably suicide... but if anything that infuriated my husband and the elders even more that I should go outside of the home for help,'' she told Four Corners.

Ms
Pomery said the emotional abuse was dished out as a way to control people.

While she was disciplined for things such as cooking too much food or making the bed the wrong way, her husband had obeyed orders so that he was not responsible for his family's damnation, she said.

Former BCF group leader and electrician David Lowe, whose job was to provide counselling to members, said the congregation's secrets were immediately conveyed to elders.

He said he had spoken out as a way to reach his wife and three children who remain church members.

"They need to know from me as a husband and a father that I believe they're in a bad place,'' Mr Lowe said.

Ms Pomery said she and a handful of others had spoken to the program.

Gotta watch that, seems all to familier though, and i must say never saw it to this extent in to many of the rcf places ( there where some) but not all, certainly sounds close to scotts group, canrt say re noel's but sounds similar. just goes to show we arnt the only ones being abused i guess.

SCCF Sunshine Coast Revival Fellowship and Brisbane Christian Fellowship
(Date Posted:23/06/2008 06:03:03)

I'm familiar with this particular cult and used to visit it while trying out other churches as I was trying to leave RF. The Sunshine Coast Christian Fellowship or SCCF was up the road from our SCRF or Sunshine coast revival fellowship. It smelt and dealt just like the Revivalists but was sans tongues and the talks were even more boring, as was the music. The people had a veil of happiness but it looked skin deep.

The doctrine was even more (or perhaps equally) convoluted than Revivals. You pretty much had to be brought up in that church to understand their interpretations and way of life. I couldn't make head or tail of it, and their websites don't give any clues either. There's a sign that it's a cult. Secrets and hidden fellowhip guideline rules.

For a people who believe god didn't make them robots, they walk and talk just like they're programmed to. The youth group were even more naive than the average Revivalist youthy... life's gonna gobble those suckers right up.

Wow, thanks for letting us know this was on tonight. Am watching it now and evern recognise some people I know. Dinner nights seemed to be their favourite recruiting tool, accompanied with orchestral music. Their tithing was a big deal for them. Their disfellowshipping rules are even crueller than RFs, but not by much... in fact, probably just as bad. They use PNG as their flagship... hmm...

Wow, their attitude to churches outside of their own network is exactly like Revivalists. The controlling aspects of abusive churches are all so similar.

One of the weirdest characteristics of this church is the push to have all the youth learn an instrument. Each 'Christian Fellowship' church had a full youth group orchestra and it was all home grown chorus crap.

Holy shit how similar was that show to the revivalist crap!!  Even the leader had the same name as the moron leader in Townsville.  Vic..... the ...........  Unbelievable. Same hallmarks - money for the leaders and no account of its expenditure and would be have been game to ask!!!!! No no no - it`s for the lord`s work - you just trust.
When is rci going to be exposed for the damage and control they have executed over people`s lives. We are the lucky ones- we got out. Those poor souls.. Makes me so angry.
Sure isnt far removed from Brisbane rci Townsville rci  Mackay rci. the list goes on.
I agree with the interviewee these churches CULTS need to be exposed.

I watched this show last night - very similar to the revival groups and even more legalistic in some ways.

Maybe this will be the start of people speaking out against cults and cultish behaviour.

Good on you NTL  - that`s a great idea to order on DVD. Might do the same.  And good on you wanting to get the GRCers together. Good luck.
