I'd like to recommend a distance ed. theology course run by Tyndale College for all those who want to get a firm grasp of the bible, Christian doctrine, and the "t" word (theology) while studying at home with great flexibility. There's also training in practical stuff such as pastoralia, preaching, missions and counselling.

Ian's recommended it from time to time, but one might perhaps think he's unduly biased since he's on the staff. I've just completed the first - introductory - unit and last weekend met some of the senior staff at their annual conference / residential school. The lecturers are A-grade, the teaching material is solid (university level) and their assignment of a one-on-one tutor for each student is fantastic (especially for those who are less "academic"). It's non-denominational with staff from a range of traditions including anglican, presbyterian, baptist, salvationist, church of Christ and uniting church. The staff have long professional histories with some of the better known tertiary institutions such as Moore College and the University of Melbourne and also have experience in the "practical" aspects of Christianity such as pastoral and missionary work.

For those who have vowed to "never shop retail" it's worth noting that the course is provided basically below cost as a "ministry" by experienced university-level staff yet the quality of the course has been endorsed as matching a BTh.

I highly recommend you check out their website: http://www.tyndalecollege.org.au/

A book on the historical background of the NT
(Date Posted:22/09/2009 18:52:53)

The following book on the historical context of the NT is available at the moment from Koorong @ $7.95 for hardcover.

Tenney M (2006) New Testament times. 364pp + bibliography and index (Baker Publishing Group: Grand Rapids) - previously published by Eerdmans

Respected author, modern layout, helpful and attractive graphics; classed as "helpful backgrond reading" for Tyndale's unit: Intro to the NT.

It seems like a great value for money aid to the "meant" part of "the hermeneutical cycle" for the NT.
