Good evening, all.

Professor David Wells is a conservative American Christian who is particularly well known for being something of a Jeremiad. However, he writes books which serve as trenchant critiques of much of the shallow nonsense that infects Western churches, and he's done so again: The Courage to be Protestant: Truth-lovers, Marketers and Emergents in the Postmodern World (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2008). I've enclosed a link to a review of this work, which some may find interesting: http://www.opc.org/os9.html?article_id=147

Blessings,

Ian

Eric,

Did I 'hear' you correctly? Did you 'say' that you went to see a Binny Hinn show as recently as last year?! I first 'chipped' you about that anti-Christian shyster and your support for him about a decade ago, did I not?!

What gives? smiley11

Ralph,

I know full-well from whence your comments sprang. The problem is that neither you nor Eric seems to understand either (a) the implications of the comments with respect to this topic, or (b) the complete context that underpins and informs them. To be honest, it appears that both of you are more focused towards the "parading of your 'learning'" here, than you are towards the actual issues that are at stake (which is a common enough fault among 'toddling' exegete-theologians; I've 'chipped' Eric about this several times now). And, of course, there is the fact that the two of you have hijacked a thread that was supposed to be about my recommendation for Wells' latest book.

Ian

P.S. WRT the NIGTC commentaries, you need to understand that with this series (as with the ICC, WBC, Hermeneia and AB series) the comment turns on the grammatical and syntactical discussions of the underpinning Greek text. It's been my experience that many whose Greek isn't up-to-par often misunderstand what is being construed when they browse the 'comment' section, for no other reason than an inability to follow the lexical discussion.

Ralph,

Regularly enough you state some fairly daft comments, and reach some fairly daft conclusions, often based on nothing particularly substantial. You've done as much again. Lacking the training, the skills and the experience needed to be able to personally 'weigh' the (often) competing claims of certain authors, you retreat into the naive defence, "no-one can really be sure so let's not worry ourselves about it!" Well, please forgive me for stating so, but such an attitude is nonsense!

And as for why? Well, truth matters, bro'.

Ralph, maybe Eric regrets his 'confession' about attending a Benny Hinn crusade and now finds it embarrasing? After all, I'm meant to be the 'fluffy pentecostal' here and yet you wouldn't catch me dead at one of those 'crusades' or whatever they're called.

Also, I don't think you're being 'misled' in any way, so don't get your knickers in a knot (lol)

For sure, it's not easy doing your own research - but I've learnt the value of doing so rather than just listening to one person's point of view. I've discovered some really good commentaries out there and I'm sure there are many more available to help you understand the matter more clearly. Just an hour or two at the end of each day reading such matter and being prayerful about it and you'll be surprised at how much you will learn. (Not trying to offend, just hoping to encourage?)
