Hi All,

I would like to recommend a book that most of us who have come out of a controlled church environment would relate to.

Different Group but the similarities are astounding.

"Behind the Exclusive Brethren" by Michael Batchelard

Michael is closely following the 'Duker' case and has made several reports in The Melbourne Age so far.

Whilst reading the thing that has shocked me is the tactics used to gain control,  Rc's to my mind are somewhat undetected and are much more subtle, making them more dangerous as you sit unaware.

Where the Brethren make their outward appearance different, RC's follow the some of the same principles (The doctrine of separation for example) but appear normal- an subtle counterfeit to the eye at first glance.

It is answering a lot of questions to why things were said and done, things I didn't even realize had effects and consequences on my own actions and thoughts.

I'm finding the read quite therapeutic :)

I ordered mine at my local bookstore, you can do the same at a Dymocks, Borders or which ever is convenient if they don't have it in stock. The book launch is in Sydney tonight so it should be fairly readily available.

A Funny thing happened while I was still in RCI (now left 1 1/2 years ago Praise God) We were at one of my daughters end of year celebrations with an activity she does, and we knew some folk there were christians, and as we were seaching for other places to fellowship we asked them about there church, and they said they went to an exclusive brethern home group and after telling them that about the legislism and the way RCI was run, they said and I quote " Our place isent that bad, you guys would fit right in"  Fairly ironic comming from them to say that about Rci.

In Australia there are 3 main Brethren Groups.
Some 'Exclusive Brethren' are not of the 'Closed' Brethren Variety. The 'Exclusive Closed' are as the name suggests, exclusive and closed!!.
The 'Exclusive' Brethren can just be a tighter form of the 'Open Brethren', which will except converts to their group unlike the 'Exclusive Closed' which definitely wouldn't be at an activity with unbelievers.

i bought this for my mum for her bday - we share an interest in cult-churches.  I'm waiting for her to read it first (given it was her present) before I snap it up lol
